Lucy Lippard (United States) lole de Freitas

Manuscript, c. 1975

American art critic Lucy Lippard, exponent in the theoretical and critical production of feminism in the arts, met the work of lole de Freitas through the 1975 Paris Biennial. Lippard discusses the presence of the mirror in the work of lole de Freitas, seen as frequent in the artistic production of women, the fragmentation of the image of her body and the possible meanings of the knife, so often wielded by her. Resuming excerpts from testimonies of the artist herself granted to Anne Marie Sauzeau-Boetti and the writings of other critics about lole, such as Barbara Radice and Henry Martin, Lucy Lippard makes an overview of the works produced up to that moment and relevant aspects of the artist's trajectory, such as her performance as a dancer, associating her with other female artists and with aspects of current feminist poetics.
